Here are the most frequently asked questions.
What is an OCR tool? An Optical-Character-Recognition tool is a software program that converts images containing text into digital text that can be read by a computer. JP-DIT-E uses OCR to take a screenshot of the rectangle you draw in your screen and convert it to text.
What are the benefits compared to other similar software? Almost all other software will either be heavily limed in the kind of content supported, considerably more verbose to configure and use, fail to recognize a lot of text or lack learning oriented features. JP-DIT-E is the only tool that nicely packs everything together for a comfortable learning experience.
What can I do if JP-DIT-E doesn't recognize a specific word? JP-DIT-E uses one of the best OCR engines available (manga-ocr), it can reliably recognize virtually all digital text and almost all rendered text in images. Still, if it fails, just try again. Compared to other methods that fail consistently, drawing a rectangle produces slightly different images every time, chances are that if it doesn't work in the first try it works on a second one or selecting a bigger, smaller or rotated, section.
What operating systems are supported? Currently only Windows (Desktop) systems are supported. We are working on a Linux version and a MacOS version is planned for the future.
Is there a minimum required level of Japanese needed to start using the program? Yes, at the very least you should already know hiragana, katakana and basic grammar. There are many free resources online to learn those, on average it should not take longer than a month.
